As the name suggests this is a bitter top fermented ale. It is often dark amber in colour. Here in Australia many beers are labelled bitter but few are bitter ales.

If you are looking for Victoria Bitter then you need to look under pilsener. Yes, the famous VB is not a Bitter but a Bitter tasting pilsener.
