Pilsener, Lager, Pils, whatever ou would like to call it, is a style of beer that revolutionised beer production in the 19th century. For the first time you had clear light amber beers. It is now the single most popular beer style in the world. Almost every major brewery will produce a pilsener style beer. This is not my favourite style as I like the bigger, more solid beers however, a great pilsener is wonderful on a hot day!

Cascade Premium Lager
Brewer : Cascade/ Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : A well crafted lager. Crisp, dry and full of well balanced hops. Winstate Annual 1995 said : "Pale straw colour with fine lacing;"worty" notes and aromatic hops in nose. Full malt flavour and body with pleasantly bittered finish. A well-balanced premium lager with enough fresh hop character to make it a standout".

Coopers Clear Ale
Brewer : Coopers
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : May/June 1995 Winestate said : "Clear in colour with good carbonation and head retention. Hops on the nose with creamy, sweet aftertaste. Rounded but with a refreshing 'tang' on the end".

Comment : Crown is very smooth and easy to drink. Very European in style.

Diamond Draft
Brewer : Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.2 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Don't know about the beer but they did have a great ad with a Sumo wrestler refusing to drink it because it has less carbohydrates.

Emu Bitter
Brewer : Swan/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.6 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Swan describes this beer as "Emu Bitter is for those who prefer a more bitter beer. A trace astringent finish results from the high hoppiness and medium body."

Emu Export
Brewer : Swan/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Swan say this about Emu Export "Emu Export is medium bittered and full bodied but with a crisp clean taste that's perfect for the west's hot, dry climate. "

Eumundi Lager
Brewer : Eumundi/ Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Another Queensland drop. The brewery is in the little country town of Eumundi behind the Sunshine coast. The brewery used to be housed in a typical Queensland country pub but the main brewery is now on the Gold Coast. The old pub is well worth the visit special on a Saturady when the local markets are on. Quite a palatable lager.

Fosters Lager
Brewer : Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : CUB's international beer, Australia's answer to Heineken and other mega brands. Don't know of too many people who actually drink it in Australia. If you are outside Australia and this drop is in your local bottle shop don't expect to see other CUB products as Fosters is often brewed under a licencing agreement that states that CUB cannot sell any of its other brands in the distribution area.

Fremantle Bitter Ale
Brewer : Matilda Bay/Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : This is actually a lager rather than an ale. Australian brewers bow to marketing tricks rather than stating a correct stle.

Hahn Ice
Brewer : Hahn/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Hahn describes Hahn Ice as "The special light-stable hop extract used in this beer allows it to be packed in clear glass bottles. The unique flavour is due to the Ice Brewing technique which produces a smoother, purer and more refreshing beer."

Hahn Longbrew
Brewer : Hahn/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : ? % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : It was marketed on having much less carbohydrates hence being better for you. May/June 1995 Winestate says : "Fruity on the palate with high bitterness and German Style. Bitterness lingers on the aftertaste". Sadly, this beer is no more.

Hahn Premium
Brewer : Hahn/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Hahn describes Hahn Premium as "brewed using genuine German Hersbrucker hops, grown on the Hersbruck Hills North of Munich. The German hops add a high aroma value to the brew, with a relatively low level of bitterness. The hops are added very late in the brewing process to highlight their aromatic quality and provide a fresh, green and herbacous aroma."

James Squires Pilsener
Brewer : Maltshovel/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 345 ml
Comment : I am not a great fan of the pilsener style but this beer is well worth the drinking. This is what Dr Chuck Hahn had to say ""Using a much higher hopping level than most Australian Lagers, James Squire Original Pilsener is brewed with Czech Saaz and New Zealand Belgian Saaz aroma hops to produce the pronounced floral spicy finish and the wonderful herbaceous aroma. Ê Food suggestions: A perfect accompaniment to any spicy dishes, such as fiery Indian curries and chilli-enhanced Thai stir-fries. In addition, itÕs perfectly at home with those German sausages and sauerkraut.""

Melbourne Bitter
Brewer : Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : May/June 1995 Winestate said : "Inviting aroma. Palate is well balanced and creamy with just enough bitterness and astringency. Very good". I find it better than Victoria Bitter (VB) which is the other major Victorian brewed beer.

Comment : They have big thirsts up in the Northern Territory and the joke goes that this is a "Stubby" (normally only 375 ml). This is the original "Darwin Stubbie". I haven't tasted it but I have been told that it is not a bad drop.....and just the right size for the hot Darwin days!!

Southwark Bitter
Brewer : Southwark/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.5 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Southwark describes Southwark Bitter as "This is one of the few remaining examples of the Australian primed-bitter style so prevalent in the 1940's and 50's Slight sweeter finish adds body to the beer. "

Southwark Premium
Brewer : Southwark/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.2 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Southwark describes this beer as "An outstanding international style lager beer with excellent body, malt character and a pleasing hop bitterness, designed to complement a wide variety of food." The Winestate Annual 1995 said : "Pale golden lager displaying fine bubbles. Some "buttery" aroma notes. Sweet maltiness on initial palate countered by generous hop flavour and a lingering finish".

Swan Draft
Brewer : Swan/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.8 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Swan say this about this beer "Swan Draught uses barley sourced exclusively from WA's world renowned growing fields to produce a golden coloured lager with that famous smooth malty flavour that has made it WA's No. 1 tap beer. Tasmanian grown hops provide the bitterness to make this a well balanced, smooth and easy drinking draught beer. "

Tooheys Extra Dry
Brewer : Tooheys/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Tooheys describes this beer as "Tooheys Extra Dry is a crisp dry finish lager. The dry finish is achieved by an extended fermentation, ensuring minimal residual fermentable sugars. Wonderful fruity, malty notes accompany a mellow middle palate. A clean aftertaste. "

Tooheys New
Brewer : Tooheys/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.6 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Around our way New is often referred to as "Gnu" as it is purchased in herds. I have friends that drink nothing else. Tooheys describes New as "Tooheys New is characterised by its lightly hopped flavour complemented by a good balance between bitter and sweet tastes. Enhanced thirst-quenching qualities and high drinkability."

Tooheys Pils
Brewer : Tooheys/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.2 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Tooheys describe Pils as "Brewed with Saaz hops from the Czech Republic to give a light, refreshing beer with a crisp, hoppy finish without a lingering aftertaste. Food Suggestions: An ideal palate cleansing aperitif. Great with lightly seasoned seafood and salads, herbal gourmet sausages or grilled pork. "

Tooheys Red
Brewer : Tooheys/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.5 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Tooheys describes Red as "Tooheys Red is a full bodied bitter lager brewed from the finest natural ingredients. The flavours of the finest Australian malt and hops produce a smooth, malty flavour with a tangy bitter finish."

Victoria Bitter
Brewer : Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : The famous VB. Of all very commercally available pils, it seems to be the most well received by European visitors. People north of the Victorian border generally jokingly call it "Green Death" (a reflection of the green label).

West End Draught
Brewer : SA Brewing/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.5 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : West End describes West End Draught as "A favourite for generations, it is a well balanced beer with a significant malty character and clean hop bitterness. "

West End Export Bitter
Brewer : SA Brewing/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.9 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : West End describes West End Export Bitter as "A well balanced and flavourful beer with a satisfying soft bitterness, pleasant malty character and excellent creamy head."

XXXX Bitter
Brewer : Castlemaine Perkins/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.8 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Being a Queenslander (It's the beer we drink up here the slogan goes), I am bias. I grew up with XXXX. For an Australian Pilsener it is pretty good. May/June 1995 Winestate said : "Easy to Spell and easy to drink. Floral nose with good upfront sweetness on the palate and pronounced malt flavours. Lingering bitterness on the finish. A real thirst quencher". Castlemaine describes XXXX Bitter as "A traditional Australian lager with a clean, crisp taste and a satisfying after-bitterness. XXXX Bitter's delicate aroma comes from the blending of two hop varieties and a sweeter, fruity tang from the yeast. High drinkability in warm climates. "

XXXX DL Lager
Brewer : Castlemaine Perkins/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.4 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Castlemaine describes XXXX DL Lager as "DL is a full fermented lager with low residual carbohydrate content. As a result this beer has a light body, clean flavour and a crisp, dry finish for easy drinkability. "
