Brewpubs or Boutique Breweries as we call them down here, were very plentiful in the early '80's. The late '80's and early '90's cured that! Resession killed a lot of the small boutique breweries leaving only the very good ones behind. Below is a selection of some of the best!

BeauBelle Brewery

The Goulburn Brewery

Location : Goulburn, NSW
Fr. Michael O'Hallorn took over the run down Golburn Brewery in the early 1980's. Here he brews a number of beers but his most famous is his Stout. After a recent visit I brought back one of the 3 litre "Stubbies" of the Stout. Michael was a great host and show me and my wife through the brewery. He does conduct guided tours on a Sunday. It is really worth the trip down to Goulburn. Michael is also looking for interested people to help restore the Brewery to how it was in the 1800's. For those who are interested, many of the steam driven equipment is housed in the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney (Michael would like to get it back and get it working).

Kelly's

Location : 521 Stanley St, Mater Hill, Brisbane
Kelly's produces a very nice European style Lager. A very nice bar but you have to push your way past the yuppies on a Friday night. Sadly Kelly's has been pulled down.

The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel

Finally got to this pub! Very nice place to sit for a few quiet beers. It is a beautiful stone building with bare wooden floors. The walls are festooned with nautical relics and references to Nelson. I only tried on of the beers brewed on the premices, the Old Admiral. Their comment was that it was a similar style to the dark lager Dogbolter but here I would beg to differ. I felt it was more like an old ale than a dark lager. It was still a nice drop!

Matilda Bay

This brewery is the home of Redback and Dogbolter along with other speciality brews. Both Redback and Dogbolter are excellent! I haven't been to the brewery but Kersten Kloss said she got "sussed on a few pints there..."

Sadly the Pump house has stopped its brewing. You can still get a drink there but not one of their own fine ales.
