This is a strong, very dark (if not black) ale with suggestions of richness and sweetness. There are often hints of berry fruits and treacle (although no fruit or treacle are added). These characters come from the top fermenting yeasts used and from the wonderful types of malt roasts selected. Fermentation is never allowed to go to completion so the sweetness is retained.

Kent Old Brown
Brewer : Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : A great example of an Old ale. This drop gets a mention as one of the world's best produces in Michael Jackson's "Beer Companion"

Southwark Black Ale
Brewer : Southwark/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.4 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Southwark describes this beer as "This is a newcomer of an old style. Moderately hopped with a deep red-brown colour derived from crystal malt and roast barley used in the brew. " I have placed this beer in the Old Ale category as I think it fits the criteria.

Tooheys Old
Brewer : Tooheys/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 4.4 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Maybe I just prefer the dark beers but Old is one of my favourites. It is nice to knock a couple of these back at the end of the week. It is fruity with hoppy overtones. There is some residual sweetness with dry cut off. Yes there are hints of coffee and chocolate. Tooheys gives it this description " Tooheys Old is a robustly flavoured ale made with top fermentation ale yeast. The beer is lightly hopped and black malt gives it darker colour. The fruity ale-like esters blend well with the subtle hoppiness and hints of coffee/chocolate to deliver a unique beer." This is a fairly accurate assessment of a great beer. Michael Jackson lists it as one of the great examples of this style in his "Beer Campanion". The May/June Winestate 1995 had to say : "Fairly neutral nose. Roasted barley on the palate. Much thinner and more easily drinkable than its big brother stouts. Try with a gourmet toasted sandwich." I think that it is a most pleasant beer and very easy drinking.
