Castlemaine describes Carbine Stout as "Full bodied, high malt and caramel flavour. Roasted barley and a blend of malted grains produces a coffee/chocolate type character that is enhanced by the pronounced hop aroma and bitterness. "

Got an excellent review in the May/June 95 Winestate magazine. They said: "Molassis and Oats aroma. Very dark in colour with roasted barley on the palate. Full bodied but not over the top." My stout for the money!

It's Coopers, what more do I have to say. An excellent stout. May/June 95 Winestate magazine said : "Big. Notably darker and thicker than its brother stouts and with an attractive complex roasted coffee and dark chocolate aroma which follows onto the palate. Lovely balance and with a robust bitterness. Full marks."

A traditional milk stout of excellent quality. I was so impressed when I visited the brewery (Australia's oldest brewery and maltings) that I bought a stubbie. "A stubbie?", I hear you say. The stubbies are in fact 3 litre bottles with swing top lids. They cost a bit to buy but once you have the bottle you can take it back for refilling ! If you are stout fan I am sure you will be going back for a refill !

I prefer a full bodied stout to a porter. I do know that it is true to style but porters just seems to be a watery stout. If you are not a big stout drinker yet you want a dark beer this might be a good compromise.

Thank's John (Lock), you reminded me about this brew. I haven't had this drop but it got a good write up in Michael Jacksons Beer Companion.

Southwark describes this beer as"Old Southwark Stout is based on a recipe perfected by the Company nearly 40 years ago. Almost port-like in character due to the high alcohol levels."
