Wheat beers are those beers which are principaly produced from wheat rather than malted barley. There are two distinct styles that are produced in Australia which are both European styles. Those styles are the German Weizenbier and the Belgian Witbier. The later has coriander and orange peel used in the brewing process which gives it a very floral nose and the citrus taste on the palate.

Both styles are ideally suited to light summer beers that go well with the Australian summer. I believe this is one of the best things to happen to Australian beer in quite some time.

Australian White
Brewer : Maltshovel/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 345 ml
Comment : This is the second attempt by Maltshovel to produce a Belgian Wit Bier. I feel it still doesn't come up to the standard of a Hoegaarden or a Witte Raaf but it is getting there! Great summer drinking.

Redback Original
Brewer : Matilda Bay/Carlton & United Breweries
Alcoholic Content : 4.7 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Very refreshing, a wheat beer in the Kystall Weizen style. The Hefe Weizen version is available from the Redback brewery in Melbourne. It gets an mention in Michael Jackson's Beer Companion.

Southwark White
Brewer : Southwark/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 375 ml
Comment : Soutwark describes this beer as"A lightly cloudy beer brewed in the style of the Bavarian white (wheat) beers, from locally grown wheat and hops. With its intriguing spicy flavour. White is the perfection companion for garlic prawns or any spicy seafood dish."

Summer Wheat Beer
Brewer : Maltshovel/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 345 ml
Comment : This is the first attempt of MaltShovel to produce a Belgian style Wit Bier. This is what Dr. Chuck Hahn had to say "This slightly cloudy wheat beer is brewed with a large proportion of unmalted wheat, in addition to malted barley. The wheat adds a bit of tartness to the brew, and contributes to the white creamy head and fine cloudiness. Infusions of orange peel and coriander."

Witbier
Brewer : Hahn/Lion Nathan
Alcoholic Content : 5.0 % Alc/Vol
Volume : 345 ml
Comment : Not a bad attempt at a Belgian Wit Bier. Again this is not a Hoegaarden or a Witte Raaf but still well worth the drinking and a great one for the hot days of summer.
